Best of Birthday Blues

So, here I am posting two projects on the same day, going from one extreme to the other (from punch art to plain stamping)...but I wanted to show you a simple birthday card I made for my sweetie:

He's the type of guy who doesn't think birthdays are anything to fuss over, so much so that I actually forgot I needed to make a card for him until just before he came home from work!!! Okay, in my defense, I was attending a 3-day super intensive live stream webinar that started that morning, so I wasn't in my stamp room all day.

He likes the color blue (man after my own heart) so I decided to work with my recent favorite blue combo, Island Indigo and Pool Party. A friend of mine had just opened my Honeycomb Embossing Folder and we had run a sheet of Whisper White card stock through to experience the oooooooh-and-ahhhhhhhh-goodness, so I had that scrap lying on my desk. I sponged some Pool Party ink over it, trimmed it, and put it on the Island Indigo card stock base, which I also had precut and scored for another project, and had sitting on my desk! I wanted more Island Indigo showing so I added another layer with one of the Apothecary Accents Framelits. All I needed was a super quick, non-girly birthday greeting. I grabbed my new Best of Birthdays stamp set, because the oval greeting in there can be punched out with the XL Oval Punch. Hey, I wasn't being lazy, I just needed something FAST! I stamped the greeting in Island Indigo ink, added some accents with the writing tip of the Pool Party Stampin' Write Marker, and layered that onto a Pool Party card stock hand-trimmed pennant. Stamp, Glue, Done. I personalized it, tucked it in an envelope, and it sat there for all of about 15 minutes, until he got home and opened it. Perfect timing, even if I do say so myself ;-)

2013 Leprechaun Top Note Box

Several years back, I created THIS Leprechaun Top Note Box...and today I am featuring an updated version:

It takes a bit more time to make, and a bit more attention to detail than some other Top Note boxes I've shared, and I'm just sharing the dimensions and supplies today in text. If you want to see a tutorial video, leave me a comment and let me know--your voice counts :-)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) You'll need one full sheet of Gumball Green card stock. Cut it in half to get two 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces. Trim one of those pieces to 5-1/2" x 6", this will make the "box" shape in the middle, in step 15. (set the 5-1/2" x 2-1/2" piece aside, you may want to use it for step 12)
2) Cut the remaining half sheet of Gumball Green to two pieces at 4-1/4" x 5-1/2", and run each piece through the Big Shot using the Top Note Die. Lining up the tips in the track of your Stampin' Trimmer, cut one of the Gumball Green Top Note Die cuts in half, in the short/fat orientation.
3) Take a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of Pink Pirouette card stock, and cut to two 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" pieces. Run one piece through the Big Shot using the Top Note Die, and hang onto the other half for step 9.
4) Using a Stampin' Sponge, dab a bit of Cajun Craze ink over the front of the Pink Pirouette Top Note Die cut, to give it a slightly ruddy look.
5) Using the Boho Blossoms Punch, punch 13-15 of the biggest flower out of Tangerine Tango card stock (I used 13). Arrange these around the bottom half of the sponged Top Note Die cut, for the beard. When you have the look you like, adhere them in place. For this project, I have used Tombow Multipurpose Glue except where noted.
6) Take one of the Gumball Green half Top Note Die cuts, and adhere it over the top of the Pink Pirouette Top Note, for the hat.
7) Punch two 3/4" Circle Punch pieces from Whisper White card stock, for the whites of the eyes.
8) Punch two 1/2" Circle Punch pieces from Basic Black card stock, for the pupils of the eyes. (Optional: punch 3/16" hole in pupils for a "twinkle" in the eye by using a "confetti circle" from the Cupcake Builder Punch, or use a White Gel Pen to create it)
9) Punch one 1" Circle Punch from a piece of Pink Pirouette card stock and cut in half, for the eyelids. Punch one 1/2" Circle Punch from a piece of Pink Pirouette card stock for the nose.
10) Sponge around the edges of each half 1" Circle Punch piece, and the 1/2" Circle Punch piece with Cajun Craze ink.
11) Adhere the pupils to the whites of the eyes, and adhere eyes on Leprechaun face, just below the Gumball Green hat. Then add the 1" half circles with Mini Glue Dots over the eyes, at an angle, for eyelids. Adhere the 1/2" circle with a Stampin' Dimensional for the nose.
12) Using the writing end of a Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker, you can freehand the smile. Or, if you prefer, use the 1-3/8" Circle Punch to punch a hole in a scrap piece of card stock. Then, lay the open hole you punched out, over the face and center the nose in the hole. Then trace along part of the open circle with the marker to make a uniformly curved smile. Add a few dots on each side of the nose with the writing end of the marker, for freckles.
13) Using the Petite Curly Label Punch, punch through a piece of Brushed Gold card stock (or Champagne Glimmer Paper). Center that hole in the middle of the larger Curly Label Punch, and punch again to get the "buckle" for the hat.
14) Layer the "buckle" over the center of a 3-3/4" x 3/4" strip of Basic Black card stock. Lay the layered "buckle" and "band" about 1/2" above the edge of brim of the "hat" and adhere in place. Trim away excess around curved edge of hat.
15) Create box from 5-1/2" x 6" Gumball Green card stock: Score 1-1/4" in from the left and from the right parallel to the 5-1/2" side, and score 2-1/8" in from the left and from the right parallel the 6" side. Snip along all four of the score lines on the 6" sides, up to the 1-1/4" score line, then fold sides in and adhere to create an open-topped box.
16) Adhere face to box, making sure that the bottom of the beard does NOT go past the bottom of the box, so the box can sit flat on its bottom.
17) Adhere the full-size Gumball Green Top Note Die cut to the back of box, again making sure the tip of the Top Note does not extend past the bottom of the box. You will also want to ensure that the back Top Note is adhered at the same height on the box as the front one. Adhere the remaining Gumball Green half Top Note to the back side of the Top Note you just adhered to the box. This extra bit helps reinforce the back Top Note with a second layer at the top.
18) Leave top of box open for gift giving, or close box at top of "hat" with self-adhesive Velcro dots, or punch holes at top to close with a black brad.

Stampin' Supplies: Gumball Green card stock, Pink Pirouette card stock, Whisper White card stock, Basic Black card stock, Tangerine Tango card stock, Brushed Gold card stock (or Champagne Glimmer Paper), Cajun Craze ink pad, Stampin' Sponges, Top Note Die (used in the Big Shot), Boho Blossoms Punch, 1" Circle Punch, 3/4" Circle Punch, 1/2" Circle Punch, Curly Label Punch, Petite Curly Label Punch (only available FREE during Sale-a-Bration), Cupcake Builder Punch (optional), White Gel Pen (optional), 1-3/8" Circle Punch (optional), 3/16" Neutrals Brads - Basic Black (optional), Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker, Stampin' Trimmer, Paper Snips, Tombow Multipurpose Glue, Mini Glue Dots, Stampin' Dimensionals.

A Short Pause to Ink Up!

Just a quick departure from our regularly scheduled programming, to bring you some information about Stampin' Up! Classic Stampin' Pads. Stampin' Up! came up with something new for the 2012-2013 Annual Catalog, called the Firm Foam Stampin' Pad. This ink pad features Stampin' Up! Classic ink, in a full-sized firm foam pad...as opposed to the old linen covered felt pads.

MY CLUE - Classic Stampin' Pad

The new Firm Foam Classic Stampin' Pads Provide better ink coverage for your stamps, and only require a light-tap to produce flawless images! The new Classic Stampin' Pads create wonderfully solid images, as the Firm Foam releases more ink onto your rubber stamp than the felt pads. When using the Firm Foam pad, your stamp will get an even, solid covering of ink that you may not have been able to achieve with the felt pads. If you are using the ink pad frequently you may need to re-ink your Firm Foam pad more often, but it does take less to reink it than a felt pad.

Each full-size ink pad features a crisply printed, glossy label on the top of the pad that is easier to read and that will not fade or chip off! There are labels for four languages (English, Spanish, French, and German)--just choose your language, peel it off the back, and add it to the front of the pad for easy identification! The new Firm Foam Classic Stampin' Pads use the same patented flip-top case design that stores the inking surface upside down, so the pad surface stays moist, and they are available in all colors, including our exclusive In Colors!

Five ink colors have undergone formula changes to improve functionality and color stability with the new firm foam pads. These colors are: Basic Black, Basic Gray, Marina Mist, Perfect Plum, and Tempting Turquoise. All five colors of the reformulated inks have been fully tested and approved. While using the new ink formula in the old Classic Stampin' Pads is fine, do not use the old ink formula for these five colors in the new firm foam pads. Any refills purchased after April 30, 2012, will contain the new formulated ink.

If you are participating in the Late Night Stampers Spring 2013 Treasure Hunt, my clue is: Classic Stampin' Pads. Anyone can participate, and you can win your choice of over $150 worth of Stampin' Up! product...so go ahead and check out the instructions and blog list below my signature block :-)

Sale-a-Bration Feeling Sentimental Card Set in Folder

At first glance this FREE Sale-a-Bration stamp set may seem sort of bland or boring, but Feeling Sentimental is actually incredibly versatile. Because the images are gender-neutral, you can use them over and over again with different colors for a different feel. Here is a simple set of cards (with envelopes) done in neutral colors in a coordinating folder:

UPDATE: Check out a Video Tutorial for this project HERE.

These are great to make and have around for yourself, or to give as a gift. Stay tuned for a quick tutorial video after the weekend. In the meantime, I've put together a group of supplies you can order, so you can make these (eight sets of six cards each, actually), and the total is just over $50 so you can get the Feeling Sentimental stamp set for FREE! This stamp set is exclusive to Sale-a-Bration, so be sure you finalize your order no later than 11:50pm MT on March 22nd. In fact, I recommend you place your order the day before, so you don't have to worry about experiencing web site delays due to the HUGE amount of purchases on the last day of Sale-a-Bration!

Stampin' Supplies you will ABSOLUTELY need:
Soft Suede Card Stock
Soft Suede Ink Pad
Sahara Sand Card Stock
Very Vanilla Card Stock
Very Vanilla Medium Envelopes
1st Edition Specialty Designer Series Paper
Stampin' Sponges
Choose the Feeling Sentimental Sale-a-Bration stamp set FREE!
(when your merchandise total is at least $50)

Stampin' Supplies I highly RECOMMEND*:
Stampin' Dimensionals or Mini Glue Dots (to raise your focal image)
Paper Snips (or similar sharp snips)
Stampin' Trimmer (this is the new one, it's SO way nicer than any other trimmer!)
Stamp-a-ma-jig (to ensure proper placement of images, avoid wasting card stock)
Choose FREE Vintage Verses stamp set when your order reaches another $50

*When you see the tutorial video, you will understand how much easier the specific tools I've listed above will make your project. Until then, just trust me--you're gonna kick yourself if you don't have them. When you earn a second FREE Sale-a-Bration stamp set, Vintage Verses is the perfect choice, as it coordinates beautifully with Feeling Sentimental...as you'll see in my next blog post.

MY PERSONAL SALE-A-BRATION BONUS: If you purchase the list of supplies above that you'll ABSOLUTELY need, from my ONLINE STORE, you will have enough supplies to make 48 cards. I'm Back, with a Tier of Cupcakes Card!

Sorry I was gone for the last couple/few weeks, I thought I had my health issue under control, but it had other plans. It's on a come-and-go as it pleases sort of basis right now. Unfortunately, that makes blog posting consistency a bit of a challenge for me! However, my son turned 20 recently and I had an idea for a card that I just *had* to create and send to him:

The idea really did start in my own head, but I figured it wasn't original, so I used the Google and found the perfect pop-up template HERE. I used the PDF at actual size, but I did trim around the pattern to make a standard 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" card (instead of a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" card). I temporarily adhered my trimmed pattern on top of my 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" Pool Party card stock, and cut and scored right through the copy paper printed pattern--pressing down hard to get the cuts and scores to transfer to the card stock properly. Then, I removed the pattern, creased the folds, and backed that with a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of Island Indigo card stock which I scored to fold in half.

I put a band around it (top pic) that just slides off, to keep it closed. The background on the front of the card is the Alhambra Jumbo Wheel, just rolled over the front a billion times at different angles. On the inside of the card, if you look at the side view (bottom pic) you should be able to see that I assembled the cupcakes first, then had to cut into and trim a side on the ones that were next to "steps". You totally can't even tell I did this when you just look at the card. Here's the text I got from my son: "WOW. Now that's a birthday card!". Needless to say, I was elated at his response :-D

Stampin' Supplies: Create a Cupcake stamp set, Cupcake Builder punch, Sassy Salutations stamp set, Letter It stamp set, Number It stamp set, Alhambra Jumbo Wheel & Handle, Island Indigo card stock & ink, Pool Party card stock & ink, Crumb Cake ink (frosting), Soft Suede ink (sprinkles), Whisper White card stock, Tombow Multipurpose Glue, Stampin' Dimensionals (only for the 4U pieces on the band), Paper Snips. (I also used an Exacto & self-healing cutting mat for the pop-up pattern)
