Scalloped Heart Sticky Notepad Cover

This is a special shout-out to those Target Store Dollar Bin enablers...you gals know who you are. I found some ultra-cute scalloped heart sticky notepads (a.k.a. "post-it notes") locally, and had to dress them up. I thought they turned out absolutely dreamy. That is, if a sticky notepad can be dreamy...

If you are lucky enough to find some of these scalloped heart sticky notepads, and want to make this holder, here are some quick dimensions:
• Start with 3" x 7" piece of card stock
• Score at 2-3/4", 3-1/8", 5-7/8", and 6-1/4"

Polar Bear Treat Box

Okay, I absolutely had to have the Polar Party stamp set...it has the cute polar bear you see below, and also some holiday items like trees, gifts, and there are also two little penguins in the set! I really bought it solely because the penguins were so cute, and I thought that might be all I'd use from the set. But as I was making this project, I noticed that the polar bear fit perfectly within the frame, so he's my favorite in the set for now. The dangling Mini Jingle Bells really complete this project! I'm having a hard time with my lighting lately, so you'll have to trust me when I say this project looks super cute in real life!

This is a variation on a box I made previously--you can find the relevant dimensions on THIS BLOG POST. I chose to make these for my daughter to take to school for her teachers and friends, because the box is not attached to the little wraparound strip. See, we've made adorable treat containers before, and her friends just ripped them apart in their haste to get the candies. This way, they just slide the box out and open it...and our loving handiwork remains intact, so others can covet the packaging :-) I put some Merci chocolates inside, they were on sale at our corner Walgreens (usually $8 box, on sale 2 for $7). Eight of the individual chocolates fit in each treat box without any trouble or special care as to arrangement, and they are YUMMY.

I also just wanted to say that it's not too late to do some holiday crafting. I whipped out 10 of these simple and easy boxes from 4:00 to 6:00 this morning. (It's my daughter's last day of school til after Winter Break, so I had to get them done before I took her to the bus stop!) The designing is the hardest part, and I've already done that for you :-) The great thing about this Polar Party stamp set is that you can use the penguins and polar bear all winter long. Let's say you are too booked up with holiday chores and events right now and don't get your treats made until after Christmas. No problem, it's still winter for a few more months, and you can't tell me there's anyone who would not LOVE to get this little treat box as a "thinking of you" gift in January!!!

Whoo's Ready for Christmas?

Okay, so I thought I was getting over the chest cold, but it tricked me and just went deeper. Grrr. I've been taking it easy all morning, just sitting with my laptop...then all of a sudden I got an idea, and I had to get up and try it out. Have you ever pictured a project in your mind and just almost wet all over yourself with glee as it came together even better than you imagined??? That's what happened when I stepped up my Owl Gift Box to make this little guy:

Uh, you may not believe this, but the Santa hat and the wings were actually made from our new Holiday Stocking die. I know, right?!? There is also a new coordinating Stocking Accents die you could use to cut out a candy cane and put on the box so it looks like the owl is holding it. (Note: the dies are used in the Big Shot machine):

Or use the Stocking Builder Punch, and the owl can hold a stocking:

I moved the ear tuft pieces farther into the owl's head, because my son said it looked more like a Gremlin (actually Mogwai) than an owl when they stuck out more. And I changed the color of the eyes, so all the card stock you'll need for this project can be found in the Neutrals Collection, and the 2010-2012 In Color Collection, so you can just buy those two assorted packages and be done with it. The handle is optional, so just skip it if you don't want to invest in the ribbon and brads.

This would be a great gift box for your kids' teachers! Trick him out even further by tying some of our adorable Mini Jingle Bells onto the brim of his hat with White Baker's Twine:

Whoo Wants to See an Owl Gift Box?

Yeah, that title ranks right up there as one of the cheesiest I've come up with. Anyway, a friend of mine placed a birthday order with me recently, and her order included the Owl Builder Punch. (she just turned 29, right, Beth??? wink, wink) Well, I wanted to give her a little gift with her order, and since it appears she likes owls, I came up with this box for her gift [click image to see it full size]:

See those little tufts coming out of his ears? I have no idea where I saw that, but whoever came up with that design detail is just genius. It's actually the body of a punched bird (just the tail end sticking out) from the Bird Builder Punch. The gift is tucked in tissue paper into the box, which was left totally open at the top. The owl "face" is just a Top Note die cut piece, folded over, attached to the front of the box.  This is another project you could bling up with more layers of tufts at the ears, and some wings that stick out instead of just the illusion of wings. But, the more stuff you have sticking out, the harder it is to keep the box from getting mangled in transit. (that justifies my laziness, right?)

Ghirardelli® Chocolate Square™ Treat Wrap

Today I have a quick and easy treat holder you can make for Halloween. The cello bag inside perfectly holds a Ghirardelli® Chocolate Square™, and the way the holder is put together, the recipient doesn't have to tear anything to get the treat out! I really like these colors together for Halloween...they are Wisteria Wonder, Pear Pizzazz, and Peach Parfait.

The dimensions of the folder are 7-1/4" x 3-1/2", scored 3-1/2" from each short end. (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Simply Scored Scoring Tool for this!) These score marks will leave 1/4" in the center, to accommodate the bulk of the candy.

Now, the two features of this holder that allow it to be opened without ripping anything, are the ribbon and the cello bag. The ribbon is tied in a square knot, and can be slid down to the bottom of the folder to take it off. The cello bag is folded in half, with the opening facing the bottom of the folder, and some Sticky Strip on the back of it, just below the fold line. This means the candy is held in place securely in the bag, and you just flip up the bag and the candy slides down and out of the bag! Check out the picture below to see more detail. Again, you can certainly bling the heck out of these, but I didn't want to spend a lot of time on them, or money on them, because the chocolates can be pricey by themselves. And because of that expense, and the higher quality candy, I would definitely reserve these treats for the appreciative adult palate! Maybe think about having a handful prepared for the parents of the young trick-or-treaters who come to your door :-)

Another Stationery Box (Updated)

A little over two years ago I posted a stationery box that would hold 4 cards and 4 envelopes. You can check out my previous sample HERE.

Today I'm posting an updated version of that boxed set, featuring the Paisley Prints Designer Series Paper and the Four Frames stamp set, available through this month's Spring Is Blossoming Special. This would make a great Mother's Day gift--but you'll need to order the supplies on special, by 4/30/2011!

The box pattern uses an 8x12 sheet, which is ideal if you are using a sheet of Designer Series Paper. The remaining 4x12 strip can be cut into two 4x5-1/4 pieces which are the perfect size to layer on front of coordinating standard sized cards. You can theoretically get NINE BOXED SETS of 4 cards and 4 envelopes, out of one 12 sheet package of Designer Series Paper, though the printed paper patterns within each boxed set will vary. Just make sure you have a selection of coordinating card stock colors, or go with a coordinating neutral color like River Rock (like I used on my cards), or Crumb Cake.

ROYAL BLOG TOUR Spring 2010

I created the projects below for the Royal Blog Tour, and they feature the Vintage Vogue stamp set (Clear Mount, Item 118598, $17.95; Wood Mount, Item 117690, $23.95).

This first project is something I call a Matchbook Album. All the inside pages are created by scoring and folding one sheet of 12"x12" paper or card stock. The colors I used for this project were: Very Vanilla card stock and craft ink, Bashful Blue card stock and classic ink, Soft Suede textured card stock and classic ink, Kraft card stock, and VersaMark ink. I "cheated" a little and also used the coordinating Very Vintage Jumbo Wheel, and the *{love}* image from the Tiny Tags stamp set.

You can see the pages sort of fanned open below. I used both the Sending Love Hugs Notes, and Sending Love Kisses Notes, and their respective Glassine Envelopes for a couple of the pages. These come in Whisper White, but I sponged the notes with Very Vanilla Craft Ink so they'd match the vintage look, and dried them with my heat tool--and I think they turned out great!

This next project uses the same colors and stamp sets. The box on the left will hold 8 cards plus 8 envelopes inside. The card on the right is just an example of a note card you could put inside the box. Like the matchbook album above, the box is created by scoring and folding one 12"x12" sheet of card stock. I personally think either or both projects would be great for Mother's Day!

I created this 12x12 scrapbook page using My Digital Studio™, and the same colors I used on the previous projects. As you can see, the digital Vintage Vogue stamp set images are the same ones included in the rubber stamp set, but with My Digital Studio™ the images can be sized to better fit your page! And instead of stamping off to get a lighter color, you change the opacity of the image.

This final image is another My Digital Studio™ project--a card made in the same colors as the previous projects, using the Vintage Vogue stamp set. It's awesome to design projects in My Digital Studio™ because the program works through a system of layers, so you can "stamp" over other images without masking or cutting anything out!

Great Friend Card Pouch

I saw something like this posted on a fellow demonstrator's blog recently, without a pattern, and thought it might be easy to re-create something similar with a sheet of card stock. I started by making a larger one with 12x12 card stock, but I honestly don't keep much of that size on hand, so I thought a tutorial for using letter sized sheets might be more practical. This card pouch should easily hold at least 8 standard size cards & envelopes! (I hope to post some matching cards tomorrow, to complete the gift set)

REMEMBER: as you go through this tutorial, you can click on any picture to see it larger. You will use ONE full sheet of 8-1/2" x 11" card stock to create the card pouch itself. Additional card stock will be necessary for embellishment.

First you'll want to cut two 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces from your sheet of card stock. These pieces form the front and back of your box, so if you would like to decorate the background of these pieces, with Texturz Plates or Stampin' Around wheels, this is the time to do it! On each of these two 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces, you will make one score mark 1-1/2" into one side of the card stock, parallel to the 4-1/2" side. The area from the score mark to the end of the card stock (approximately 1-1/2" x 4-1/2") will be the bottom of the project, so it's okay if your decoration does not extend all the way across that part.

After you cut the two 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces, you will be left with a 2" x 8-1/2" strip. Cut this strip in half to get two 2" x 4-1/4" strips. On three sides of each 2" x 4-1/4" strip, make a score mark approximately 1/4" in from the side. Cut out the two small scored squares in the corners of each of the pieces. See picture below for end results of all cut and scored pieces:

Next, you'll want to punch holes in the top of each 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece, to use as a "handle", to tie the box closed. The top of each piece is the end farthest away from the score marks. The easiest way I've found to place a punch hole exactly where I want it, is to create a template out of grid paper.

To create a punch template for this project, cut a piece of grid paper to 4-1/2" wide, by 2" tall. To find the middle of the strip, fold it in half, then take a pen or pencil and mark the center line. Then decide how far the punch should be from the edge of the project. For this project, 1/2" from the edge is perfect. So, make another pencil mark at 1/2" from one of the 4-1/2" edges of the grid paper. See grid paper picture below for visual on the markings:

Now that I have the center of my template marked, and have marked the edge of where I want my punch hole, I will line up my punch using these lines for reference, and punch it. See pictures below for closeups:

All that's left is to place Dotto (temporary adhesive) on the back of the template, and stick it to the top of the 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of card stock, lining up the edges of the grid paper with the card stock, as shown below. Remember, the top is the end farthest from the score mark. You can see exactly where to punch the hole now. You can either leave the template in place and line up the punch to punch inside the hole, or you can trace the punched out area with a pencil, if you don't want to risk over-punching into your paper template. Remove the grid paper template, and place it on the other 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece, and punch the second handle hole.

Take one of the 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces, and place Sticky Strip (or other high-tack/strong adhesive) across the scored part as shown below. I like Sticky Strip because it is strong, and I don't have to wait for it to dry!:

Remove the red liner from the tape, and stick the two 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" pieces together, by overlapping the scored areas. For more detail, see the pictures below--they are taken from a few different angles to give you a better idea of what you're looking at. The front panel will be the one on which you place your Sticky Strip, because you will only see a fold at the bottom front, and not a seam.[Remember, you can see a larger image by clicking on any picture in this post.]

Now you'll use the 2" x 4-1/4" pieces to make the sides of the card pouch. To make assembly easier, fold each of the scored sides in towards the bump of the score mark, then fold back flat. See pictures below for visual:

Next, place adhesive onto the scored edges of each side piece, as shown below. If you use Sticky Strip, you may find it is just slightly wider than the area your scored tab will allow for adhesive. In this case, you can trim your Sticky Strip down the center lengthwise, and use half as much as I did on mine!

Remove the red liner from each piece of Sticky Strip as you get to it. You do not want the adhesive exposed before you are ready to join the pieces, or you might accidentally join tabs at the wrong place. I find it easiest to adhere the bottom tab of each side piece, to the bottom of the pouch first, as shown below.

After you adhere the bottom part of each side, then pull the sides of the box up and one by one remove the red liner from your Sticky Strip, carefully line up your pieces, and press to adhere.

Once all the side piece tabs are adhered, you may wish to take your bone folder and reach it inside the pouch, and press on the back side of the tabs to burnish the card stock into the adhesive. This provides a more secure holding.

Decorate the front of the box as desired, and loop ribbon through the handle to close the card pouch. The front looks beautiful when embossed with Texturz Plates, or stamped with a wheel in a coordinating color, prior to assembly. Experiment with rounding the corners, or punching partial shapes away from each corner (i.e., with the Designer Label punch) to add interest and elegance. You should be able to fit 8-12 standard cards, plus their envelopes, in this box--depending on the amount of layering you use on your cards.

This card pouch, filled with handmade cards and coordinating decorated envelopes, makes an excellent Mother's Day gift! Just remember, if you are giving away notecard sets, you'll want to be careful with your embellishments. Anything that makes a card over 1/4" thick, or which causes a significant protrusion from the card, may result in the following: sender may have to apply extra postage to the card, recipient may receive the card postage due, or, a protruding embellishment may be caught in a postal machine and mangle the envelope and/or the card.

A Shower of Onesies!

I know people have babies all year round, but for some reason there is a huge surge in interest for baby cards in the Spring! So, I have a few to share, and a pattern so that you can make your own baby cards.

Of course, these make awesome baby announcements and baby congrats cards, but you could also make up a bunch to give to a new mom as 'thank you' cards for baby gifts, or they would be great for baby shower invitations. Use the gown version of the pattern for a christening...it could even be tweaked to make a little paper angel! Since you can print out the pattern, you could reduce the size of the onesie and cut some of them out for scrapbooking pages, or to put multiple onesies on the front of a card for twins, triplets, etc. The gown even makes a cute little dress that could be used as an invitation to a little girl's victorian tea party.

I have posted three different samples made with this pattern, so you can see that you can make a very simple and quick card (handy for making sets as gifts), or you can take your time and doll it up for a unique and memorable event.
