We Create Blog Hop - Technique Toss Up!

Welcome to the MAY 2021 "Technique Toss-Up" Blog Hop!!! We generally hop on the first day of every month, and this month each hopper is going to share a different technique with you! I chose to feature watercoloring with the NEW Flowers & Leaves Punch for my post. (NOTE: the punch will be available to order from the 2021-2022 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog starting May 4th)
{scroll to the bottom of this post for ALL product purchase links}

Our Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper comes in a package of 5"x7" sheets, so they are the perfect size to cut in half and then trim down slightly to mount on a foldover 3-1/2"x5" card base from our Basic White Notecards & Envelopes! To get the watercolored flowers, I used the Flowers & Leaves Punch to punch a stencil out of a scrap piece of cardstock. Then I traced the flowers I wanted with the Watercolor Pencils, and the Watercolor Pencils Assortment 2. After I got the outline of the flowers I wanted, I basically scribbled some color into them, and then swished around the color using our Water Painters.

This little strip of Soft Seafoam Cardstock was stamped with a sentiment from the Color and Countour Photopolymer Stamp Set, using the Gorgeous Grape Classic Stampin' Pad. I like to pop up watercolor paper layers using our Foam Adhesive Strips all along the sides, and also down the middle, so if there is any buckling it gets minimized. As long as I had those Foam Adhesive Strips out, I also used them to adhere the sentiment.

I colored with the Watercolor Pencils on the back of the flowers that I punched out with Vellum Cardstock, and smoothed out the color with Water Painters. That actually makes the flowers curl - you can manually twist them the way you want them to stay as they dry. Before I put them on the card, I did draw a few light lines on the front with the Watercolor Pencils. For the leaves that were punched out from Soft Seafoam Cardstock, I just drew a quick line down the center of each one, and washed over it with our Water Painters. The flowers and leaves were adhered with Mini Glue Dots, and to finish the card, I dropped a Champagne Rhinestone in the center of each vellum flower.

I'm not an expert at watercolor by any means, and when you are using the Watercolor Pencils it's quite different from picking up color on your brush and laying it down. So, my method with the pencils is just a lot of scribbling. One tip I can share when working on a watercolor piece is that you really want to work on just one area/color at a time and then let that dry before moving on. That way, the color you are working with will pool into itself with minimal muddiness from other wet colors around it. And you really have to give up trying to force it to look a certain way...just let it flow, and keep putting more water on it!

  1. I can never get my watercoloring to look right - I usually steer clear of projects with that technique. I love the vellum flowers on top and the colors you chose.
